Muncie’s West Side Skatepark: A New Hub for Creativity and Community

Exciting things are happening in Muncie! After years of discussion, the city’s first dedicated skatepark is finally happening. The West Side Skatepark will soon become a vibrant spot for skateboarders and artists alike. This isn’t just a new park—it’s a space to ignite creativity, foster community, and build pride in Muncie.

“The project is coming to life,” said Mayor Dan Ridenour. “Beginners will have a safe place to learn, and Ball State students will see the best of our City Parks.”

City Council member Ro Selvey, who led the fundraising campaign, highlighted the value of community participation. “Having the community actively involved makes this project even more meaningful,” Selvey said.

A Look Back: The Journey to a Skatepark

The City of Muncie is investing about $600,000 in upgrades to Westside Park, including the new skatepark. The project has been in the works since 2020. Rundell Erstberg Associates & Hunger Skateparks, known for their innovative designs, were chosen to lead the project. They gathered public input to finalize the design in 2022.

Alongside final permits from the DNR, the skatepark underwent a redesign in 2023. The redesign, while unexpected, allowed the park to better fit the sites restrictions and the cities current budget. Now fall 2024, The state permits have now been approved, and construction has begun. This has been a very fast paced process with most of the vertical ramps has been completed by Dec 2024 and they are nearing the final stages.
